Today, it snowed. In looking out of my window, I realized that snow covered the trees, the lawn and even the roads. Snow totals are estimated over six inches in the Triad area. In anticipation of large amounts of snow, I surfed television channels to hear just how much snow had fallen. As I went from one news story to the next, the message was the same, “drive slowly.” I could not help but wonder… When are the times in our lives that God may be telling us to “drive slowly?”
Too often our days move so quickly that we never take the time to pause and reflect. Snow days give us that time to pause, re-energize and see where we are on our journey. As you sip on your favorite hot drink and enjoy the winter season, can you think of any areas of your life that you may need to listen to that small voice that says, “drive slowly?” Let me hear from you.

Pastor Charles Goodman preached a powerful message at our Fall Revival entilted–I Give Up. It was based upon Proverbs 3:5-7–”Trust in the Lord always, and lean not to your own understanding. Acknowledge God in all your ways and He will direct your path.” The message challenged us to learn how to take our hands off situations we have been trying to control or manipulate and trust that God will lead and direct us. How do you know when you need to surrender or give up on a situation?

Why do people go to church? This is a question that I ponder even though I am committed myself. But, to be honest, I sometimes wonder how it would feel to NOT have grown up in the church or be familiar with the faith I profess. What draws people to attend and/or join a church.

Steve Hardy’s book is quite popular. Have you had a chance to read it? What do you think about it? Is he making some presumptions that do not hold for people of faith?

One of the things I gave up during Lent was sweets–my favorite food. I enjoy cakes, candy, cookies… I am counting down the days until the end of Lent (the Friday before Easter). As I do, it is really helping me to see the importance of sacrifice. We will sacrifice for things we value. Truly Jesus must have valued being faithful to his call as the Messaah and what that faithfulness would bring for you and me. What is it today that people value to the point they will sacrifice for it.

I am getting ready to go into a dream team retreat. Truly God is moving in our midst. I know that prayer will be an essential element in helping to fulfill the vision God has for us. There are so many ways to exercise this important discipline. I like to rise in the morning with a good cup of coffee, while it is quiet, just Miles (my dog) and me and call upon God through scriture reading, listening to God’s voice to me and then praying for others. I do a lot of visulaization when I pray as well. I encourage everyone to find their own way in terms of deeper, meaningful prayer time. It is food for the soul.

I really enjoy the longer days that come with Spring and the Season of Lent. Yet, no matter how long the day, I never seem to have enough time to do what needs to be done. Ministry is challenging to say the least. I am not complaining, just explaining…I wish I had more time to pray, write, and especially visit with more people.

Lately I have been thinking about the subject of fear. Healthy fear can be a good thing–fear of touching a hot stove can prevent a wound for example. But there is another kind of fear that paralyzes people and keeps them from acting on dreams, opportunities, ventures etc. Many people have such kind of fear. But entrepreneurs, visionaries seem to move out and transform the world around them despite the fear and risk involved in their actions. What causes us to fear? Conversely, what causes us to risk and move on our dreams and aspirations.
